Joe's high school job in 1978 was a layout artist for the Tennessean/Nashville Banner. He used markers and tracing paper to layout display ads. He obtained a degree in communication arts, then worked on agency contracts, as an agency art director, and has now freelanced for 20 years. He has spent most of his career designing for printing presses, commercial displays, and screen. As senior art director for a North Carolina agency in the mid-1990s, Joe proffered himself to design one of those new-fangled web-sites. From animated gifs to multiple, dynamic, server-side, and client-side script and markup languages Joe has taught himself to be a geek. "It's funny how an animated gif sometimes just does the job while Flash may be serious overkill," says Joe as he contemplates the balance of creativity with technology. "If it's going to communicate the intended message it has to work technologically but must look great, too. That's why I love content creation and platform development." Joe is also a founder and partner with ZIPBOX Media. ZIPBOX is a web hosting, digital download sales service geared toward digital artists like musicians and eBook authors. Joe oversaw or directly developed the entire ZIPBOX platform and designed it's image -- happily merging technology with creativity.
